Open, poly, ENM, swinging: the words
They get used interchangeably and they are not the same. Which one you are changes who you should be talking to.
| Term | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Ethical non-monogamy (ENM) | The umbrella. Any arrangement where more than one connection is on the table and everyone involved knows and agrees. |
| Open relationship | A committed couple who date or sleep with other people separately. The primary relationship stays the primary relationship. |
| Polyamory | Multiple romantic relationships, not just sexual ones. Emotional involvement is the point rather than the risk. |
| Swinging | Usually recreational and usually done together, as a couple, often at parties or clubs. |
Ethical non-monogamy explained goes through it without the jargon, and polyamory versus polygamy clears up the one people confuse most — which matters in South Africa, where customary marriage makes polygamy a legal category rather than a lifestyle one.
Why the mainstream apps go badly
- Their rules are often against you. Several of the big apps restrict or remove profiles that describe non-monogamy.
- Disclosure is a trap. Say it in your bio and you get filtered out; say it on the third date and you are accused of hiding it.
- Couples have nowhere to stand. Most apps model one person per account, so a couple is either lying or invisible.
- The audience is wrong. A huge pool of people who want exactly what you do not want is not an advantage.
What to put on a profile
The couples and singles who do best here are specific. Say what your arrangement is — open, poly, solo-poly, swinging — and what you are looking for from it. Say what is off the table. If you have a partner, say whether they are involved, informed, or both.
You are not being asked to justify anything. Everybody reading has already agreed with the premise; the only question is whether you want the same things.
How the site handles the awkward parts
- Nobody messages you uninvited. A connection has to be accepted by both sides before either can send a message.
- You are not obliged to be findable. You choose a username, your exact location is never shown, and private galleries stay closed until you approve someone.
- Verification without documents. Members verify with a photo of themselves holding a handwritten note, reviewed by a person and deleted 30 days later. No IDs are collected.
- It is free — and the first 5,000 members get Unlimited free for life. After that, a free account sends 30 messages a day, with an optional once-off R200 unlock. No subscription, ever.
Rules, check-ins and the thing nobody mentions
Every working open relationship has agreements, and every set of agreements gets renegotiated. Jealousy is not a failure of the arrangement; it is information about it. The couples who last are the ones who schedule the boring conversation rather than waiting for the bad one.
Compersion — the opposite of jealousy — is the single most useful idea to have a word for, and consent, properly covers how it actually works between adults rather than in the abstract.
